for that purpose should be sold, and that a school building
similar to that at Saiyingpun should be erected on a vacant
lot of Crown land at Tsimshatsui at Govt. expense to be loaned
to a Committee of European residents to use it at their own
expense for the purposes of a grant-in-aid School. The estimate
furnished by the Director of Public Works of the cost of car-
rying out this proposal was as follows

The Executive Council advised the grant of a
site, if the residents were prepared to build the school. This
offer was duly communicated to the Committee by the Inspector
of Schools, and rejected and in January, 1897, application was
again made for the temporary loan of an English Master from
Queen's College, with which it was not possible to comply. On
the 19th. January, 1897, correspondence was re-opened between
the Hon. Secretary of the School Committee and the Private
Secretary, and an offer was made for the grant of a suitable
site and buildings to be erected at Government expense at a
